Iron Mt from Allison mine in 2024

Some years back I summited Iron Mt via its SW ridge, approaching via Allison Mine . I haven't been doing as many of these sorts of trips as I used to, and I've been wanting to reassess my fitness level. So yesterday I teamed up with Wes and Jeff and Gautier to repeat this route. We walked up the Eas...

Thanks for the report, and glad you were able to complete the route. Where's the area with the trail work? Up to the saddle from the start?

I suspect he might have lots of photos for each trip, but only a select few were included in the trip report. And that there's no automateable way to match them up. But he can hopefully tell us that I'm wrong.

AW: if you Still have the photos for all your old reports on a disk drive somewhere And have some automateable way to convert your trip-report image filenames (like "tr6.jpg") to the images you have on your computer Then we can do an automated mass-reimport to get everything back. The seco...

Wow. What an adventure! The crag you did get to looks like it could be worth climbing too? We haven't heard of anyone going to the "goal" crag? No trip reports, no mountainproject? Nothing?

Awesome! I love solving puzzles like this. It's so much more satisfying to figure it out yourself than have somebody just tell you where it's at. Want to come find some airplanes?

Re: A land assessment in the Los Padres

It's a 5 acre lot, the smallest one in the neighborhood. It would be interesting to know the history of how the lots came to be, and why they're different and all that. If we ever come back (unclear why anybody would), approaching from the E (I5) could maybe work better. It's longer, but you'd be sp...

Look at the race flow or the run/rest stats. I don't understand how they're doing this.

A land assessment in the Los Padres

So back in 2002, a friend of a friend of a friend bought some land at an auction. This is in a remote location, and he never got around to doing anything with it. Or even ever visiting it. So today, over 20 years later, Crosby and I went out to assess the property. We're going into the Los Padres NF...

Amazing, you found my eyelash curler!? You can have it back, I got eye boogers all over it Thunder Ridge has some of the best scree surfing in the summertime. That sounds like the Los Padres :) Was this one of those trips where you can see the goal the whole time, but it's unattainable? Sure you don't want to go back? You know the bear trick now

I was 3rd out of 15 or so. Definitely did far better than I otherwise would have. The two that beat me normally would have finished in half the time as me, but here I was 3rd by only a little bit. Recommended! :)

Big Butch Wash, Baldy Bowl

Today I "ran" a trail-running race. We started at Manker Flat, and set off to hit 3 checkpoints: Thunder Mountain peak, Ski hut, Baldy peak. In any order, using any route. There's still a lot of snow at elevation, so clearly "running" this isn't what I wanted to do. I brought mou...

Great ride, and great to meet you, John! I actually couldn't get a bike ticket on the earlier train either, but the conductor took pity on me, and let me on anyway. I rode with Brendan for a while; had I known yall were hanging around somewhere, I would have joined. We will cross paths again1

Re: Bike-ish Traverse of Warm Springs Mtn

Epic!!! Did you "ride" the whole "Warm Springs-Necktie trail" as it appears on the old usgs quads? The aerials show that there's a firebreak on that ridge most of the way, but towards the bottom, at 2600ft the firebreak splits off to go E, but the trail goes W. The trail isn't vi...

Tour de Los Padres 2024

I toured the Los Padres again this year. Somehow they made it even harder. The TDLP is a bike-packing race through the back-country of the Los Padres national forest. Due to insufficient fitness, this year I rode the tour route, the shorter option: 186mi, 18.5kft gain . As usual, this is mostly rout...
