A land assessment in the Los Padres
So back in 2002, a friend of a friend of a friend bought some land at an auction. This is in a remote location, and he never got around to doing anything with it. Or even ever visiting it. So today, over 20 years later, Crosby and I went out to assess the property. We're going into the Los Padres NF...

Re: Big Butch Wash, Baldy Bowl
Amazing, you found my eyelash curler!? You can have it back, I got eye boogers all over it Thunder Ridge has some of the best scree surfing in the summertime. I saw a report where you took that down to Manker. Ever go all the way down to the mouth of Icehouse canyon? I look at that slope every time...

That sounds like the Los Padres Was this one of those trips where you can see the goal the whole time, but it's unattainable? Sure you don't want to go back? You know the bear trick now

I was 3rd out of 15 or so. Definitely did far better than I otherwise would have. The two that beat me normally would have finished in half the time as me, but here I was 3rd by only a little bit. Recommended!

Big Butch Wash, Baldy Bowl
Today I "ran" a trail-running race. We started at Manker Flat, and set off to hit 3 checkpoints: Thunder Mountain peak, Ski hut, Baldy peak. In any order, using any route. There's still a lot of snow at elevation, so clearly "running" this isn't what I wanted to do. I brought mou...

This looks really cool. Looking at the map, it's all the way out by the AZ border? Did you already get most of the desert ranges between here and there?

Great ride, and great to meet you, John! I actually couldn't get a bike ticket on the earlier train either, but the conductor took pity on me, and let me on anyway. I rode with Brendan for a while; had I known yall were hanging around somewhere, I would have joined. We will cross paths again1

Re: Bike-ish Traverse of Warm Springs Mtn
Epic!!! Did you "ride" the whole "Warm Springs-Necktie trail" as it appears on the old usgs quads? The aerials show that there's a firebreak on that ridge most of the way, but towards the bottom, at 2600ft the firebreak splits off to go E, but the trail goes W. The trail isn't vi...

Adding the "like" buttons like we had in tapatalk is actually easy; we can use the same extension they used. Can somebody prod me on the admin board to make sure I get it done? It'll take 5 minutes to actually add the extension, but if it somehow breaks something cleaning up the mess could...

Tour de Los Padres 2024
I toured the Los Padres again this year. Somehow they made it even harder. The TDLP is a bike-packing race through the back-country of the Los Padres national forest. Due to insufficient fitness, this year I rode the tour route, the shorter option: 186mi, 18.5kft gain . As usual, this is mostly rout...

I'm not surprised, but it's sad to hear. That trail was cool. Today there isn't a huge reason to go that way. To get to the Allison mine, the trail along Allison gulch is more direct and in better shape (at least the last time I've gone that way). The trail up to Heaton saddle from Heaton flat is in...

Re: Finding Tunnel #5 In Las Flores Canyon
That's mad! So glad somebody made it in there, although I'm shocked it is passable at all. My recollection is that past the point where we dug out the opening the floor level was too high to even crawl for as far as we could see (probably the result of repeated floods carrying sediment, over many ye...

Tapatalk lost all images stored on their server from when they took over (2017) to when we took over (2024). Unfortunately AW was renaming his images, which makes them hard to identify, if we try to recover them. I'd love to find a way to get his images back, since he wrote many very unique trip rep...

What Taco said. Conditions were much more exciting than the last time , so the camera mostly stayed sheathed. The cold and the wind were just silly. We both started hiking wearing down jackets, and it was never too much. Like Taco said, the wind pushed the snow around a lot, creating flurries that I...

It almost sounds like you're asking for more free work :) I checked the import pretty thoroughly, and I'm pretty sure we got all there's to get. The missing/broken things I know about are mostly stuff that Tapatalk broke during their migration in 2017 (they weren't nearly as careful as you and I) an...
