Re: San Jack

I just created a first version of a trail handout similar to the one the Forest Service provides for the San Gorgonio Wilderness. There is a little more information on it than with the San G version. I don't have all the trails and trail camps listed yet, but I am seeking feedback. https://docs.goog...

San Jack

I spent the weekend in Idywild. I am thinking about buying a cabin up there and anyway I literally haven't visited the place since 1982. Idylwild got a dumping of Schnee last week like everywhere else, and so on Saturday I did a snow hike on the Ernie Maxwell Trail, while on Sunday I climbed up the ...

Re: Mt. Whitney March 10-13, 2011

Thanks Simonov, that looks tasty to me. I'm surprised at the lack of snow cover on the lower section, is that typical of this time of year? I'm assuming wind has a lot to do with that. I don't know what it normally has, but the lower section is the "rock band" Fritz referred to before. I ...

Re: Bobcat overload

On the subject of cats, I recently re-read Gay Talese's Thy Neighbor's Wife . Much of the book is about John and Barbara Williamson's Sandstone Retreat in the Santa Monica Mountains. By the time the book left off with the Williamsons in the mid-1970s, they had sold the property and were trying to bu...

Judging by the photos , I don't think the group that went up after us last week made it past the notch. And I think this is the reason why: http://www.kurtwedbergphotography.com/S ... jYMPE-A-LB That video is a very good view of the "final 400 feet" (aka "the gully") from the bot...

I'd rather have a North Korean one, and personally I'm kinda "over" the skull and crossed ice tools/axes thing. Ha. Too bad! I never liked the skull from the beginning, but now it's iconic. It's going to take time and hard work to make this guy a new icon: https://eispiraten.com/images-ar...

Re: Mt. Whitney March 10-13, 2011

Because I'm predicting most if not all of my potential climbing buddies to bail out on me for my attempt on this one, I think I'll probably rig up a sturdy umbilical system either attached to both spike ends if it's more icy, or pick ends for plunging if it is softer. Downclimbing solo in this mann...

Re: Mt. Whitney March 10-13, 2011

I meant the short-roping up to the notch and back. That wasn't necessary for reasonably skilled climbers (in my opinion).

But for the final 400 feet, as Fritz said, I absolutely wanted a belay, up and down. That's why I went with SMI.

Fritz and I had a lot of time to chat on our way up to Lone Pine last week. He agreed with many of you that the California Republik sticker was an awesome design. Unfortunately, I am out of them. So a new run is in order. I'd like to mix up a lot of designs on one run. We are considering the followi...
