Attempt on ridge traverse to thorn point, via piedra Blanca trailhead
I've been eyeing this hike to thorn point along the ridge for a few years and last time tried it on a whim while in the area, wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and without a saw. So when last weekend's passage ride was cancelled, Rich and I made plans to instead try this bad boy out, and this time, to come...

Re: Chaos at Covington Flats (Joshua Tree)
It took me several attempts to make it up quail; sure enough the first time it was a blizzard up there (and raining lower in the park) so we had to turn back, but came back later with better weather. It's worth getting up.

san rafael peak via the south ridge, from sespe hot springs
A couple weekends back was a 3 day-er, so Rich and I got to brainstorming wilderness adventures. I had been hankering to go back to sespe hot springs, and particularly to try out the bike/hike combo of cycling in on grade valley road (closed during these winter months), then hiking down there via th...

oh, this post seems to answer my question... i had just revived an old thread before finding this. Sounds impossible to access iron #1 via cattle canyon due to thompson and widman ranches... BUMMER

I'm wondering if anyone has tried getting up to iron #1 via cattle canyon, passing through thompson and widman--is there a way to get around the private property?

nice ride! impressive I totes agree on the dynamo light setup--went that way a couple years back and I love it. I got the IQ-XS light after some wanker stole my IQ-X--the latter model has a plastic mount which makes it more steal-able I've got a pretty boney ass and have found the b67 to be mostly t...

Re: Goat Peak Aka High Point
this is a very cool hike with a great view, particularly for me since I live within ez bicycling distance to the trailhead at temescal. Plenty of options for variations once you summit to go back through will rogers like the OP describes, or just go back the same way if you're in a hurry.

Y'all didn't ski or snowboard down I take it? I've heard of people going to baldy bowl for backcountry and have been intrigued to try it out. Have not done the backcountry snowboarding thing since I'm not versed in avy risk assessment though.

Re: Triplet Rocks from the South. Possible?
Much fun was had, and some very pretty hiking along the creek and in checking out those waterfalls, but would not try it again to get to the triplets! That is the one. Decided to leave the sprayer for someone else. Also, I just realize that caterpillar looks like the same one that is eating my dill ...

What's the deal with Widman ranch: is it still kept up and used? I did some internet searching and found an NF application to maintain a road to the place, so I guess people still live there??

Re: Triplet Rocks from the South. Possible?
Alternate report: Dima and I were trying to figure out how allergic to poison oak we are, so we decided to go on this fine hike up the river. The first few miles are super pretty and we saw some poison oak, but not enough, so we pressed onwards, going up an obscure canyon where we heard tall tales o...

Re: FUNGUS AMONG US!
Exactly... for the novice mycophiles, puffballs when immature are solid white when bisected. If there appears to be primitive gill/cap/stem structures that suggests it is actually an "egg" of a Amanita sp. which has potent liver toxins and is deadly. If it is solid white, without such stru...

Re: backbone trail: sandstone peak trailhead to camp danielson
Hey Jerry, I made it back out in that direction on a bike ride the other day and saw that the state park entrances to the area, such as from mugu are indeed closed. But if you go to camp danielson from the mishe mokwa trailhead it's all legal, and that probably explains why we barely saw anyone on t...

Are you riding a road bike? A lot of the lesser climbed rock I've run into in the santa monicas and angeles forest is pretty dang chossy. Re: GRR to Baldy - No More Quarantine Body
I did GMR to mount baldy town this last Sunday... I think the same day. On the ride up maybe 2/3 of the way encountered a rattle snake in the middle of the road, doing that spooky rattle head shaking thing. After staring at this spectacle for a few minutes a chubby dude on his road bike came down 'r...
