Glad to hear your getting back on the trail. Just gradually ease back in, don't hit on the steep stuff immediately!

Tim, what time did you start this hike?

Also, you mentioned 8000 ft gain in 11 miles (one way), but I think its a bit less than that. Round trip total elevation gain is about 8000 ft, right? And there's a bit over 1000 on the way back I think.

Was on the portion from ~ switzers to Oakwilde, it is in good condition. flowing water you'll have walk on rocks across the creek a few times.

How would you compare the west ridge of Brown to the ascent of Rattlesnake? Steeper. A little more brush. Not as long. Nice TR. Looks like some good hiking. I like the route you chose, forming a loop from Oakwilde. In terms of going N or S from Tom Sloane Saddle, I think you picked the better route...

well I'm still debating this. I haven't been on the trails on these routes so don't know how much danger there would be with snow, but then I think the snow level might not be much until ascending Lowe. I'm split on doing t his versus some hike I mapped on on the backbone trail in Santa Monica mtns...
