Re: Magic Mountain and Garfield Benchmark
Washout from above Looks Great! I haven't been up there in a while. I think I remember before and after that washout, unless it's a newer wash out (in the last ~2-3 years). I recall seeing some construction being done so perhaps that washout is more recent unless they didn't finish. Was it about a ...

Re: Revisiting The Red White & Blue Mine
I think I know where it is. Worth visiting? Cave pearls? It's definitely worth visiting, and is probably one of my favorites I've been to in the area, although the Kelsey mine was pretty incredible too. It wasn't too hard to figure out where it was by watching a few videos on Youtube and looking at...

Re: Finding Tunnel #5 In Las Flores Canyon
That was a really cool video. I was thinking the same as Tekewin. I was fearing that you might step into something below the water that was dangerous. What a cool find and I'm glad you made it out safely. The coolest mine I ever explored was Carrie mine with the boys. In hindsight I definitely unde...

Re: Finding Tunnel #5 In Las Flores Canyon
Pleasure meeting you and I am stoked to find some other lost mines in these foothills together!!!!! You are a scholar and a gentleman. It was great meeting you too. It's awesome to find people like you who know a lot about the area and enjoy checking these places out. Perhaps we can do some explori...

Re: Finding Tunnel #5 In Las Flores Canyon
That's mad! So glad somebody made it in there, although I'm shocked it is passable at all. My recollection is that past the point where we dug out the opening the floor level was too high to even crawl for as far as we could see (probably the result of repeated floods carrying sediment, over many y...

Re: Finding Tunnel #5 In Las Flores Canyon
That video of tunnel #5 is insane. Glad there weren't any deep shafts below the water. The water was shockingly clear in some parts. Great shots! I've only been in a few mines and none very far except Bighorn Mine. I think I would get claustrophobic with water filling half the shaft. Keep posting, ...

Great Pictures! I went to the base of that two tier waterfall visible from the Mount Lowe road last fall for the first time. I bet Millar is really nice now too given all of the rain.

Re: Finding Tunnel #5 In Las Flores Canyon
I spoke with jeko1034 earlier this evening about Tunnel #5 in Las Flores Canyon. I figured someone had been in it or made a video about it already (as there are some videos about these mines on YouTube), but apparently, that's not that case. I went out this Wednesday (03/27/2024) to explore Las Flor...

Re: West Fork San Gabriel river 12/25/10
I visited this area last Saturday (03/23/24) to explore some of the tributaries between the parking area and the Fishing Cabin, focusing on four tributaries that flow in from the south side of the canyon (If you haven't Big Mermaids, Little Mermaids, and Chileno Canyon to the north, then I suggest t...

Question about history of Mines in Las Flores Canyon and Pine Canyon in Altadena
Hi All, I have been interested in the historical activity of some of the mines in Las Flores Canyon and Pine Canyon in Altadena. I am particularly curious about the history and the dates that the mines became active and when they closed down (especially the Golden Star Mine, Tunnel #4, and some of t...

Re: Verdugo Peak
Thanks for sharing. I love the Verdugos. To me, they sort of feel like the Santa Monicas but a little closer to where I live. There's actually a surprising amount to explore there, and quite a few neat trails. I haven't been in a little while, but I used to frequent them a bunch a few years ago. I w...

Re: Found on internet: Etiwanda Canyon Day Hike
Neat report! I went up this way for the first time last weekend (March 9th 2024) in the morning to Etiwanda Falls then up the right and left fork. IMG_0367.jpeg (above is a picture of part of the main waterfall I got at some point) Up the right fork (east fork) above the main waterfall, I turned aro...

Re: Part way up the West Fork of Bear Creek
Im not a fan of WF Bear....the first time I went there, it was Halloweenish look...and it was after I had been rescued. So it was another 'failure' that I got out of. But alas that area set my direction toward navigation for sure....it does have that wild look, but that drew me in for a spell...so c...

Re: Part way up the West Fork of Bear Creek
Cool. Looking forward to more trip reports from that area! I've seen much of the West Fork bear creek, but I've never been up the main branch of Bear Creek above where the trail comes in, and clearly I need to get out there. The narrows on the main fork are nice and it's not too far up past where t...

Re: Part way up the West Fork of Bear Creek
Pretty! How far are you planning on going when you come back? Any particular goal? I've been up to where the main channel of West Fork Bear creek turns N , but I think AW has gone much further up. It's wild back there. I plan on going back as far as is reasonable up the creek (ideally to a large wa...

Re: Willett Hot Springs
Thanks for the report. That's a nice bear print. You ever come face to face with a bear in the Los Padres? Yes! Once I saw one roaming in Gibralter reservoir as I was coming back from the Sunbird Mine a few years ago. The other time was at night on Camuesa road on my way to Big Caliente Hot Springs...

Part way up the West Fork of Bear Creek
Despite the rain yesterday, I decided try going up Bear Creek Trail from the West Fork of the San Gabriel River earlier today. Just so you're aware, the water was quite high and I did sort of get swept off my feet once or twice, so I wouldn't recommend doing this for maybe a couple of weeks dependin...

I've also hiked along Kagel Truck Trail from access points including the Dillon Divide and Lopez Canyon Park and I think I even recall seeing a vehicle (might have been a white truck - I don't quite recall) parked on the side of the road outside of those red/black AP gates. I don't remember seeing a...

Thanks for the report! I've never been out to this one; looks cool. A question about the cabins: they're decently-enough maintained to have a watertight roof and animal-proof doors and all that? Any idea who does that? I think that there are about 5 cabins in the campsite just east of the hot sprin...

Willett Hot Springs
I started at Piedra Blanca Trailhead early in the morning (2/24/2024) and made my way along the Sespe River Trail. While I was planning on making my way out to the Sespe Hot Springs, I decided just to spend the morning at Willett due to how high the river was. IMG_8891.jpeg While I saw fewer human f...

Re: Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs
OSM is the dataset used by everyone who isn't google or apple. It is publically sourced, and doesn't suck everywhere you can't sell advertising. I added some of these routes, but didn't have complete info, so the mapped route is just a straight line in places (as you say). This is noted in the data...

Re: Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs
The waterfall is near the bottom of Forbush trails which I took when returning toward Camino Cielo from Little Caliente Excellent. Thanks not including the rerouting of the trail to avoid most the Mono Jungle (not in Google Maps yet - likely doesn't add much) The routes should all be in openstreetm...

Re: Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs
Thanks for the report. Caliente Hot Springs is twice as hot as a regular hot springs. The small pool is defiantly hot. I was refilling my bottle from the creek every 10-15 minutes or so. The larger pool is nice, and a little more comfortable, but I wanted to give the campers some space. The first t...

Mileage? Gain? The waterfall is near the bottom of Forbush trails which I took when returning toward Cam...

Re: Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains
Good explore! Kind of an all-around deal...Im still branded to certain spots for better or for worse. So what do you plan on? The same access? I like to mix things up between where going places I've already been and exploring new spots. I generally try to keep the driving one way under an hour, but...

Re: Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains
FYI - Part of the route to Rankin is still closed. It might re-open in June. This is what the forest service shows. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1111500.pdf It looked like the route I took went around the closure or at the edges but looking at it again, I might have been off...
