Tempi'po'op Trail
Ok, last one from Southern Utah. Since this trail is about a half mile from where I've been staying, I hit this after work when I don't have or can't take more time. This is an easy trail that traverses the cliff ledge above the Santa Clara River for a couple of miles. The attraction here, aside fro...

Kolob Arch
Kolob Arch sits in the Kolob region of Zion National Park. At 287' long, and 75' thick, it is reputed to be one of largest natural arches in the world. The conventional route to Kolob Arch is by way of the La Verkin Creek Trail that starts at Lee Pass trailhead here: 37.45213, -113.19140 Zion wasn't...

The Vortex
The Vortex, whose name is excessively dramatic, is a deep bowl that has been carved into the slickrock by wind, rain, and geologic forces. It sits just inside the Red Mountain Wilderness area between the small town of Gunlock and the Dammeron Valley. The trail head is along Lower Sand Cove Road whic...

I haven't done any hiking/exploring in the San Gabes in an awful long time it seems. I've been spending quite a bit of time in Southern Utah looking after my elderly mom. I have found time, however, to get out on a few trails here to preserve my sanity. I was going to do one big post with a number o...

Thx dima. I see it now. But my draft isn't there. Probably user error. Too much effort to recreate. Oh well.

Some (older) members of the group instantly decided this the end of the line. Some (younger) members of the group investigated a little further but came to the same decision. What Nate is awkwardly trying to say here is that certain members of the group with accumulated wisdom acquired through many...

I guess what I'm struggling to understand is the apparent absence of common sense. 10,000 ft. in February wearing a warm up suit, sneakers, and a shoe bag. At what stage do you say to yourself, "Gee, the snow is getting pretty deep, the wind is blowing hard, and its cold AF. Maybe we should tur...

Re: MISSING HIKER ON MT BALDY (Lisei Huang)
Plenty of the hikers that get lost or need to be rescued are experienced hikers. No one is talking about the three experienced hikers that had to be rescued off the Bear Canyon Trail who went hiking in this same storm. True, but the difference is those guys survived. Because they were experienced. ...

I don't personally know, but I look at these totals every year and the variability, at least when it comes to the Los Padres, is pretty much what you see every year. Based on that, I've always thought the totals were pretty accurate.

Re: Missing on Mt Wilson - Zachary Crehan
Thinking about this some, and based purely on the publicly available information (at least that I have seen), I start wondering whether this is a lost "hiker" situation. The information out there is that Zach was seen (not clear by whom or what) at the observatory and/or near the Mt. Wilso...

Re: Pt. 3,650 via South Ridge
How did the route from 3650 to 4202 look? Walker, before he left us, told me he thought it would be possible. It looked possible, but hard to say without going back for another look. There will be some additional brush, but the crux will be that rocky section just beyond 3650 that starts the ascent...

Pt. 3,650 via South Ridge
When Sean, Jeff and I hiked out to Burnt Peak on New Years Day, we eyed the south ridge leading up to Pt. 3,650 and agreed that from that vantage point it looked doable. So last Sunday morning, I went back to test that theory. I arrived at the entrance to Switzers around 8:45 a.m. to find the cars a...

Lots of activity today between Switzers and Red Box. Looked like the focus was the Cloudburst Canyon area. Multiple helos and a bunch of S&R vehicles. Seems a bit far from where the search for Zach was originally focused. Anyone know anything?

Just curious about your "no reason" to visit Ken Burton without a bike comment. Is it because there are so many riders? Trail is uninteresting? Other? That trail is a gap in my experience.
