Re: Anybody want a pack station?

Interesting, didn’t know there still was one. I wonder if they’d deliver anywhere in the Gabe’s as long as there’s a trail. I wonder who they deliver to currently. Inquiring minds want to know! There are 81 cabins left in Santa Anita Canyon along with Sturtevant Camp. Many of the cabins are more th...

Very cool write up. I still have a paper copy of the 7th edition from when I first moved to LA in 1998.

I agree with you but can't imagine what it's like for those families right now. They know they didn't survive in the desert this long, so their only hope is something crazy like this.

Re: 2017-02-04 Fatality near Islip Saddle - wtf happened?

I think this event occurred on the PCT between Islip Saddle and Little Jimmy Campground. The trail traverses a steep slope on the north side of Mt. Islip. Back in May of 2010, I started off hiking up the PCT from Islip Saddle eastward towards Little Jimmy. It's May, but I had my microspikes. As soo...

Re: Adventure Pass lawsuit settlement

The monument designation was just a way to get around Congresses resistance to designating a San Gabriel Mountains NRA. NRAs are administered by the National Park Service, which is distinctly more competent and capable than the Forest Service in terms of managing public lands for recreational use. ...

Re: Weeklong Backpacking Trip in the Angeles NF

The Station Fire may have affected trails. For example, the Gabrielino trail from Switzer to Altadena is ill-advised for a backpacker. Could you expand on that? http://www.yelp.com/biz/gabrielino-trail-altadena 1/29/15: "Most of this hike was closed after the Station Fire and only recently reo...

Re: EATON CANYON. CAN WE BUILD A NEW TRAIL TO THE SECOND FALLS?

AW, So theoretically if one wants to build a small 300 yard waterfall bypass, (not debating weather it is feasible or not), it would require the full amount of red tape as other major changes? I have zero idea how this works, but for practicality, don't they have cut off for red tape on a minor alt...

Re: So how does this government shut down effect us exactly?

The Angeles NF is not closed like it usually is after a big fire. You can still drive up there and park and hike. If a campground has a gate on it, they'll probably close it but might not. Don't take this out on the local Forest Service guys and gals, they're just doing what they have to do. They do...

Re: Anyone seen a bear while hiking in the Angeles Forest?

A few years ago I saw a little girl tree a decent-sized bear at the Chilao picnic area. The bear was wandering through and the girl's parents were trying to get a photo of her and the bear so they kept moving her closer to it. Finally, the bear had enough of this and climbed up a big ponderosa pine....

Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)

That is probably the case, Rudy. That section of trail has been a problem since 1942. I wish they had the cash to remove Brown Mountain Debris Dam. It serves no purpose anymore. Logistically it wouldn't be difficult - just run a D-9 Cat down the old Dark Canyon road to make way for an excavator and...
