TR (Long!) Eight Days on the PCT through the San Gabriel Mountains, October 2023

Intro: I backpacked 100 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail through the San Gabriel Mountains last Fall. I aimed to hike about fifteen miles per day for six of the days. The extra mileage was split between the first and last day. This was required as I had to recruit my wife to help me park my car at ...

Excellent TR! Thanks for posting. That is one of the most scenic sections of the JMT, and one that I would gladly do again. Except maybe the long climb up into Dusy Basin. :D

Re: Anniversary & Birthday Hikes at Lupine

Thanks for the great write-up, Sean! I can't really add a lot to that, except that we had a fun time. After our hike to Cabin Flat and the mine, the puffy clouds of the day became a solid, threatening mass. It got windy and much colder without the sun. It didn't stop us from eating cake and wishing ...

Thanks for the offer, Jeff! I made it down to Lupine in the RAV4. Several trucks with hunters down there. The road to Lupine is tough but doable. It gets tricky by some puddles on the way down then rocky like a roller coaster when crossing the wash at the bottom. I set up an old tent to claim the sp...

I am planning to come. I will already be there as I am arriving on Friday. It's a long way from San Diego. And I'm retired so spending an extra day should be OK. Looks like I may be coming. Unlike last year, I returned from my month-long road trip in time!

Q: Will my 4WD Rav4 make it down the road from Guffy to Lupine? I heard it was rough. I've only got 8" clearance, but I'm not afraid to try.

We talked about how jfr probably has more fun on his trips because of a slower pace. Oh well. A solid type-2-fun trip. Ha ha! Yer crackin' me up. That was quite the epic! But, yes, it was Type 2 fun. Here are some more photos from the hike. I'd like to thank Sean for organizing it, Jeff for providing a tasty lunch, and Madison for supplying the lubricant for spirited discussion. I should be able to make it. And I have a big daypack so I can act as a mule to carry supplies. What should I bring beyond my own gear? (I'm still kicking myself for missing the last forum hike. Re: TR: PCT - Cloudburst Summit to Burkhart Trail

How cold does it have to get before the e-bike battery fails? I'm not sure. From some quick googling, it looks like Lithium Ion Batteries discharge just fine when it's cold (in fact they get warmer when you use them, especially on a high-current application like an eBike), but they can get damaged ...

TR: PCT - Cloudburst Summit to Burkhart Trail

Hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and Burkhart Trail from Cloudburst Summit to the Buckhorn Campground on Angeles Crest Highway. This could be an 8 mile "loop hike" if you want it to be, or you can use a bicycle on Highway 2 and save yourself a 2 mile roadwalk. Or, you can "cheat" an...

I've got the InReach Explorer+ (the full-size unit) and it works fine for me. I use my phone via bluetooth to view the map and to compose texts. I think part of your problem down in deep, steep canyons is that it won't send out a message using the Iridium satellite network until it first has a solid...

Beautiful shots. I especially like the feel of the foggy ones. About how long did it take to dry your stuff out in the morning? We lucked out and mostly had hot, dry weather. But when the tent was damp in the morning I just rolled it up and carried the water weight all day, then dried it out late a...

Nice report, I didn't realize that much of the trail was actually on the beach. Any other trips I have read seem to always mention being on the hillside and just skirt down to the water a few times. Are there designated camp areas or just pitch wherever it's reasonably flat? I'd say about 60% of th...
