Re: Middle Fork Lytle Creek - 4 Sept 2023 TR

@Uncle Rico -- That approach certainly keeps the crowds down. Speaking of the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness, I haven't had a chance to get out there yet this year. Really looking forward to October and (hopefully) getting out there. I want to see what the rains have done to the camp sites down by the...

You're welcome. I need to get back out there and see if the upper portion of the Stone House trail is actually followable. Somebody has been working those trails back there. They're in better shape now than before the pandemic.

Re: Middle Fork Lytle Creek - 4 Sept 2023 TR

Thanks for the report, and for downplaying the Middle Fork's charm to the Redditors. Yeah, I didn't want to Instagram it to death the way Icehouse Canyon and Cucamonga Peak are getting. Ugh. Hopefully my comments are realistic. I do think Icehouse is nicer -- if you could go back in time before Ins...

Middle Fork Lytle Creek - 4 Sept 2023 TR

Important stuff: Road is open to trailhead. 4WD not needed. High clearance is probably a good idea. I only saw trucks and a couple of Subarus at the trailhead. Trail is in decent shape up to Comanche Camp. The three scree fields are pretty tolerable to traverse. Some years they have been worse, much...

Middle Fork Lytle Creek?

Is the road open up the Middle Fork Lytle Creek? What kind of shape is it in? Is 4WD required? In the past, all that was needed was decent clearance, but I know we got some serious rain with Tropical Storm Hilary. And how's the trail up the Middle Fork? Anyone been up recently? It used to be pretty ...

Re: Sabrina Basin

August is usually too late for skeeters, they thrive at the end of snow melt period. September is the best time to be out there, no bugs to worry about. I've traditionally taken that approach to the Sierra: August and Sept are best. But. Now with all the fires... I'm actually starting to think of J...

Everywhere I've been in the Sierra, the mosquitoes are seasonal. I was in Mammoth for 4th of July and there were zero mosquitoes, none. I went up to the Tioga Pass area the following day, and there were enough mosquitoes that I brought my head net out.

people will do anything to avoid exercise. "Among the US population... 34.1 million adults aged 18 years or older—or 13.0% of all US adults—had diabetes (Table 1a; Table 1b)." I'm sure it's unrelated. And hey, only 34 million people. Glad it's not a serious problem... HJ Link: https://www...

Awesome bike ride! I appreciate all the detail on the road. It's a cool looking mountain and worth doing some day. This is tempting for me since I've had my MTB for over a year now. Still not great, but comfortable on most trails. My general impression is that biking is harder than walking and easi...

Nice trip; nice TR. Haven't been up there in a while. I've yet to make it to lower Fish Fork, a definite "to do" on my mental list. Those wild canyon trips are always hard, dirty work, but those trips are the most memorable. Hiking crowded trails really doesn't feel like wilderness, ya kno...

Nice stuff. The Arroyo Seco and that general vicinity has a special place in my heart. I've been hiking in around there since the 1960's.
