Treasure Hunting in the Los Padres

One of my recent interests had been looking for Native American art in the Los Padres. I am not particularly interested in the art itself but most locations are kept relatively secret so they become interesting puzzles to figure out based on pictures and snippets of information. I have found two maj...

Re: Eduardo "Monster" Sarabia arrested along Hwy39

There are so many vehicles parked in turnouts at odd times and I always think to myself, what in the world are people doing up here at this time. Now I know it is all the rapists, damn.

Nope I keep most things in my head and there is so much change especially with the frequent fires that it feels like the wilderness is getting recreated every 10 years or so. Some of my favorite early hikes have been changed forever.

Peak 4,054

For some reason I continue to hike the Magic Mountain Wilderness, there are few redeeming qualities other than there are no official trails through the area. When I first looked at the area the peak that initially interested me was Peak 4,054 which is smack in the middle if it. Despite this I have h...

I'm surprised they reported it, is is an unspoken rule that suicides are not publicized by the news unless there is a compelling reason, sad.

Re: 38th birthday Oat Mountain from the north attempt

Back on a rough but very followable use-trail at the top of Rice Canyon, we headed west along a scenic thin and bumpy ridge-line past a flagpole and some nice new benches built in 2020 with a summit register. I can't find a peak name for this anywhere - does anyone know a name for this? That rock o...

Re: Kagel Canyon rd: access

I've hiked here numerous times, the proper access point is further up the hill after the cemetery. There should be a parkland sign and a fire road on both sides. You do walk by a house but I think it is owned by them and then you hook onto the fire road coming from the paved road.

Re: MISSING HIKER ON MT BALDY (Lisei Huang)

Plenty of the hikers that get lost or need to be rescued are experienced hikers. No one is talking about the three experienced hikers that had to be rescued off the Bear Canyon Trail who went hiking in this same storm. Quite often the opposite is the issue, experienced hikers who think they can deal...

Happy to see the trail open again with no controversy, there had been so much BS around it re-opening. Sean is looking fit, almost didn't recognize him. 8-)

Re: Missing on Mt Wilson - Zachary Crehan

I had assumed suicide but with this additional detail it seems a little odd. Why would you call someone to pick you up, if the intention was to kill yourself? As far as finding him, with all the brush, you can go five or ten feet away from someone and not see them, it doesn't surprise me that he has...

RE: continue to Lk Hughes Rd, yes. It's a shorter segment, and probably boring, haven't been that way yet. More FS road continues east from Lk Hughes Rd also, connecting to San Francisquito Cyn near Jupiter Mtn. The trailhead on that side is at the Warm Springs Rehab Camp. What I'm trying to resear...

Re: san rafael peak via the south ridge, from sespe hot springs

I hiked San Rafael from Mutau, there is a very specific ridge route you need to take. From the peak returning to Mutau, you go westward through a nice forested section and then you make the turn north where it is more exposed. On some of the bumps as you head northward there is a use trail on the ea...

Verdugos-North Side Trails Condition

The La Tuna fire put most of the Verdugos in 2017 to ash. The north side got significantly hammered and the two great trails in this area were closed and much of them washed away. I had noticed that both The Grotto and the canyon trail just below it had both opened. The Grotto relatively recently so...

Re: Red's Shortcut, Ken Burton, Dark Canyon

I used to use it regularly but the bottom section got eroded where the ropes are and got way too brushy. I now go down by the fire station and hike up canyon which is probably almost as quick with what shape the shortcut is in.

Boney Mountain West Ridge

I remember almost exactly a year ago reading an article about a hiker missing near Boney Mountain in the Santa Monicas. It was a Monday and they had done a short search that afternoon and not found him. He had been missing since the weekend but only realized he was missing when he didn't show up for...

Mount Pickens

With the cold wind I cancelled my more challenging hike that I had planned for Sunday and decided on a more moderate route to Pickens. I had missed out on this peak as I had tried to hike it from the north originally on a very hot day and it had become completely overgrown on what used to be the fir...

Re: Lowelifes interview

The main problem is lack of funding and the sad part is the Forest Service doesn't need much to make an impact. Take a look at the Los Padres, if you want to see the future of the San Gabriels. I would say 50% of the trails in the Los Padres are in poor shape or essentially xcountry.

Related question - when did it grow? For years the elevation was 9399, now the signs both say 9407.

They use this for measurements now with more accuracy and the change was noted.

If you're going to think about the B-52s then it has to be Rock Lobster or My Own Private Idaho. I also think I hear people talking quite often especially nea...

Lone Tree Trail up to the power lines is in great shape. From the power lines up to West Fuji it felt similar as always with the contour around the peak having that short sketchy portion which is more comfortable going up then down by the drainage. From Fuji up to Panorama the route is clear and evi...

Yes it is clearly the toughest official peak via its easiest route with 7,200 feet elevation gain and a use trail that for all intents and purposes is a trail at this stage.

I'm pretty sure Crystal Lake is on a fault which is what probably created it, this also causes the water to drain faster from the bottom which has been one of the reasons that it almost dries out in the drought years.
