Thanks. What happens if you fall into the vortex? Do you emerge in the Stargate universe?

Thanks for the report! You got some great photos. I wonder how many people develop arch fever and have trouble returning.

Thanks for the report. Next time I suggest carrying a store-bought tortoise in your backpack, then place him on the trail for a photoshoot and say, "Look what was on the trail!"

Thanks for the report. I would totally eat 90% of your pesto dinner. Trailtopia's Pesto Pasta with hemp seed protein is one of my favorites.

Thanks for the report. Your description sounds like you were following an old treasure map. Never heard of canyon "fingers." Branches seems like the more appropriate metaphor.

Thanks for the report. If I could hike in two places at once, one location would be Utah. I love all that red rock.

Re: Dark Canyon Road (2N75)
Jason and I hiked the Dark Canyon Road from CCC Ridge down to the confluence of creeks. The trail is moderately overgrown with a few minor tread issues at slides and gully crossings. We spent several hours trimming back plants and tree branches, widening some of the tread, and clearing rocks. We did...

I'm looking for a nice spring/summer photo for the website banner. Who has one? Don't make me take a nice camera into the forest and grab one myself!

Re: The Search For Alder Crag
Has anyone tried going up Alder Creek from Upper Big Tujunga Road? Looks like about 2.75 miles XC with an old trail partway, then a rocky stretch before the crag. Alder Creek Trail? Maybe Matt knows current status (see my 2009 TR link above). I suppose. Looks like the trail drops you into Alder Cre...

Re: TR (Long!) Eight Days on the PCT through the San Gabriel Mountains, October 2023
Thanks for the epic TR! It was nice to see the closed portion of the ACH. Also, I've done the self-roasting tour on a hot day around Mill Creek summit. I recommend an umbrella to block the sun. Hoping to meet Todd at North Fork one of these days. Still haven't gotten my ass out there.

Re: Kenyon DeVore Trail (Mt. Wilson)
If I recall correctly, the KD trail used to be called the Rattlesnake Trail. I don't have a source for that. It's called "Rattlesnake Trail" on the '95 USGS, which is what CalTopo still uses for the Scanned Topo layer. Screenshot_20240520-025728-211.png Note that the Gabrielino split the ...

Re: Kenyon DeVore Trail (Mt. Wilson)
Yesterday afternoon I drove to Mt. Wilson and walked down Kenyon DeVore. I hoped to reach the Gabrielino Trail junction and turn around, but I only made it 2.1 miles before deciding to return due to pain in my right leg. It was my first time on this trail. Last year I had heard it was reopened after...

Re: Can You Be Ticketed for Speeding on a Curve with a Lower Limit?
Don't quote me, but I doubt you'll be fined for taking a curve above the suggested speed. The colored signs at turns are recommended speeds. The white signs are regulatory. But a cop can ticket you for unsafe driving. So if you're taking turns too fast that you swerve into oncoming traffic or get in...

Jim Spencer Trail
The Jim Spencer Trail was built a few years ago by the Restoration Legacy Crew. It honors a beloved trail boss who founded the Scenic Mt. Lowe volunteer group. Spencer died in 2005. The half-mile path serves as a direct connector between Mt. Lowe Camp and the Tom Sloan Trail. The trail was construct...

Re: Tom Sloan Trail
The Tom Sloan Trail was restored in 2018. After years of finding other things to do, I finally returned yesterday to see how it's holding up. The tread is mildly to moderately overgrown, with a short section of waist-high grass, where I caught a tick on my pants. Slide debris here and there, a coupl...
