Re: San Antonio Ridge - Gold Dollar Mine

Nice TR and nice album. How far, in terms of time, is Gunsight Notch from the mine (I've done Baldy to Iron on the ridge but didnt' stop at the mine)?

My son's article for KCET's Departures in recognition of the Executive Order designating a substantial portion of the San Gabriel range as a National Monument.

Re: Dusy Basin

Done trips out of South Lake many times. As someone said, beauty at every turn. When I had two of my kids with me, we took a dip in Ruwau Lake. BRRR! Excellent TR. Sounds like the leisurely pace really enhanced the enjoyment. Great photo of the lake at sunrise.

Nice TR. There's also some nice peaks in the area like Mallory and Irvine. Yes, Meysan is a good back up when you can't get a Whitney (or other) permit.

Thanks for the TR. Haven't done west ridge route since before the fire. It does look awfully "feral."

Climber Involved in Rescue Issued Citation

How's this one for seeming abuse of authority? Didn't happen locally but the outcome is not just. The rescuer stabilized the injured climber and waited several hours with him until SAR arrived. After it was all over, the good samaritan was issued a citation for interfering with the rescue! http://ww...

Canyoneering Fatality -- Local Man

A fellow canyoneer who lived in Eagle Rock was killed last Saturday while canyoneering with a group in Shaver Cut Canyon in Fresno County. His name was Luis Ortiz and he was a great guy. He was very safety conscious and always with a big smile. He apparently got caught in a slot at the bottom of the...

The LA Times reported this morning that in order to prevent the "carnage in the San Gabriel Mountains gorge" the closure of the canyon above the first waterfall will go into effect August 1.

High drama in the wilderness. I'm sure the guy's employer, the Arcadia Fire Dept., is anxiously awaiting the coroner's toxicology report.

Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek

Good point David made about the missing person's profession having a lot to with the resources expended--a fact of life. Not to make light of a serious situation, but the only person I know of who goes barefoot outdoors is that guy on that "reality" show Dual Survival. I'd be interested to...

Official announcement hasn't been made yet, but it's almost certain. Hopefully, something can be worked out so that it doesn't remain off limits to canyoneers--they are not the problem.

Good on ya Tim. You'll probably take more recovery time than previously when you were in shape but you'll get it all back. With one good hike under your belt, you're now fit enough to bring your camera next time!

Awesome stuff: the planning, the report, the post-game analysis. Man, I think what you did could only be considered failure in a very, very narrow sense. There was a lot more accomplishment than failure.

Reminds me of the time Tom, Travis Linds and I took the traverse trail to Alison Mine, then dropped into Alison Gulch, did about 3 rappels, and then out to the East Fork and back to the trailhead. This was in January and the water was dam cold!

Augie, I think your son not only has talent at saying a lot in a realtively small amount of written space but he also is very good at conveying 'time and place' in his San Gabriel mountain's articles. I totally got caught up conjuring what Chilao pre Angeles Crest Highway mighta been like and how s...

Re: Jones and Hastings Peaks

Another option is to continue past Hastings Peak on that ridge and do the steep climb up to the Mt. Wilson Toll Road. Hike up the toll road past the Manzanita Ridge junction and pick up the Mt. Wilson Trail to the summit. Maybe do Mount Yale while you're in the area. Then return on the Mt. Wilson Tr...

Re: Jones and Hastings Peaks

Nice pictures Rico. For added adventure, you can take the very steep east ridge down from Jones' summit and end up on the Mt. Wilson Trail at a point which is less than a mile from the Wilson trailhead (of course this would require a car shuttle or walking the mile or so from the Wilson trailhead ba...
