Just in case... Deconstructing 'Myths About Suicide' https://www.npr.org/2010/04/28/126365907/deconstructing-myths-about-suicide There are many myths about suicide: that it's an act of selfishness, that it's cowardly, that it's just a cry for help. Psychologist Thomas Joiner has studied suicide his ...

This tree got a little confused about which way is up at some point (Clear Creek - San Gabriels). 394535841_888332419359071_5893623275434821155_n.jpg This looks something like a Cherokee Trail Tree sometime found in the South East. https://relicrecord.com/blog/cherokee-trail-trees/ https://relicrec...

A poignant vist to the cemetery at Manzanar. A few years back we visited the museum there. They had a display of log books of the incarcerated. and there it was, the name of of best friend's Father's family.

Because of the antenna tower, I'm guessing the shack is an abandoned amateur radio repeater.

Allison Gulch is a tough walk. The last time I did a hike to those falls a rock fell off the top just as I stepped back, it landed where I was standing. It was my last solo hike.

i am curious, is radio silence after suicide SAR protocol, or media protocol? or..? There's a whole science devoted to reporting on suicide. You could google it and find websites and articles. I don't know what the various protocols are for various media and SAR groups. I'm sure it's a difficult si...

On the topic of suicide, one of my sons and his buddy found the boys Father after he committed suicide. Needless to say, it left a mark on both boys. I knew the Father and was angry with him until I heard an explanation of suicide on NPR, Regardless of your politics, it's a great discussion. Deconst...

I had the pleasure of driving a restored 1915 White truck. Hats off for getting that mirror safely up Mt. Wilson. The truck had only rear brakes, mechanically operated. The brakes were so grabby they caused the truck to skid when lightly applied at very low speed on the slick concrete of a gas stati...

Re: Proposed expedition inquiry: Pacoima reservoir from the back door?

The LA County Public Works operates the dam. The Forrest Services says you cannot fish in the reservoir here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/angeles/ ... rdb5318019 "No fishing is allowed in Morris, Cogswell, Big Tujunga, Pacoima, or Bouquet Reservoirs." but nothing about visiting. I'm gue...

It would be a very "tough" world without tungsten cutting and machine tools and it would be mpossible to do any TIG welding without tungsten electrodes.

Not sure about today, but that block building used to house a water flow instrument and radio.

Re: Dams project news

Typically, debris, i.e., other than silt and sand, are not included in the sluice gate flow. Sluice gates have a set of bars, called a trash rack, that catch the debris for removal during a slicing operation. The silt would be slushed out of the LA Basin into the ocean, where it actually belongs.

Re: Dams project news

So they let the sluice gates get buried and now they can't remove enough sediment to make them work again? Is that what's going on? No, that would help them operate, but they are usually hydraulically operated using a remote pump system. The government cannot stand the uproar of silting up river an...

Re: Dams project news

At some point they might realize they had the solution all the time. Each dam has a sluice gate at lowest level of the dam. The sluice gate is used to clean out the dam using water flowing though the lake bottom mud and out the sluice gate. The same process is required for each dam or facility all t...

Re: Trapped hikers, including 5 kids, rescued from rising rivers in Big Tujunga Canyon

The dam operator phyiscally opens and closes outlet valves, but only when approved to so by the flood control operations center. Many years ago someone at the dam in question cycled an outlet valve to impress some guests. Evidence of the short term flow was found on the many flow reordering stations...
