I hiked Register Ridge on Tuesday with the intent of bagging Mt. Harwood, Baldy and West Baldy. I am training to do Whitney in September. So, I started doing some strenuous hikes last month. I am also doing some easy ones in between so that I don't burn myself out. Anyways, last time I hiked up RR to all three peaks was about 5 years ago with Sean. This time was different. I don't know if it was the exhaustion of hiking 3 days in a row prior to RR or the fact that I am truly out of shape. I have been keeping a schedule of hiking three times a week so I thought that it would be no problem but I was wrong. I made it up to the ridge and managed to bag Mt. Harwood. I descended the Devil's backbone. The trail was clear no snow except for a small patch by Harwood. It was very windy but no one was on the trail besides the small group that went with me. Not everyone made it to Baldy that day so I don't feel so bad. There were still quite a few snow plants and I found lots of heart rocks. We will be hiking RR again so hopefully by then I will be successful.

Register Ridge is pretty damn steep and the trail is a little sandy. Also it's really hot if you don't start before the sun peeks over Thunder.

Jeff- I started at 730 am and had cool breezes all the way up. Then it was very windy and cold at Harwood.

If you haven't been to that elevation recently then that could be a likely reason for not having the energy to go forward. Or maybe you hadn't eaten the right thing before hand. The wind and cold certainly is de-motivating if you weren't expecting it. Seriously doubt that you aren't in good enough shape...just a lack of energy at the right time.

Next time you'll do it with plenty of energy to spare. Good luck on the Whitney hike.

Thanks HikeUp. It think it was definitely lack of energy and the elevation. I haven't been that high up in awhile.

Awesome! RR to Harwood, Baldy, W Baldy is my favorite go hike to Baldy these days. Quick and short, yet you get enough elevation gain to train the legs.

Register Ridge requires good footwork too because it's so steep. I should do a video on how to hike up steep slopes.
