I was always told to set my goals high, therefore I have a 13 peak loop planned for Sept. 29th in the Mount Baldy Area. I am adding Pine and Dawson to the previously done 11 peak loop. Anyone is welcome to join us on this ambitious attempt.

http://www.outdoorsclub.org/Calendar/Pr ... =9/29/2007

I am not sure if anyone will be able to complete it, but it will be fun trying. There are many bailout options so I figure it is an OK trip to post on ODC.

Anyone know how to go about getting permits for the Cucamonga Area? I didn't relaize we needed them but when I did Baldy and the 3T's a ragner asked me for the permit.

After a bit of a reality check on Sunday, I have decided that I personally am not going to go for all 13 peaks. I am going to drop Pine and Dawson and start 1 hour later at 5 pm. Of course any of you can attempt the original 13, this hike is totally open to do what you please.

So the plans are to meet at 5 am at Icehouse Canyon trailhead. Then we will leave a couple cars there and shuttle up to Manker Flats to start our hike around 5:15 am. By Dropping Pine and Dawson peaks from the loop, we will eliminate 5 miles and 3000 ft gain, making the total a more realistic (at least for me) 25 miles and 10,000 ft gain.

Anyone is welcome to join us,

Travis

I might join y'all. I'm sorta only up for Sugarloaf through Etiwanda... but I may stay on. Dunno if that helps or hinders.

Travis, I hear you didn't make it because you got a Yucca in your foot.
You O.K? Ran into the group on the way down from Timber Mtn ..

Yeah, I am really pissed. I was ignoring the yucca thorn in hopes it would work it way out, but during my warmup hike it got really sore and swollen. It was starting to get infected. I finally got it out today, had to soak the area is salt water and dug it out with a pin and tweezers. If I wasn't able to get it out I was going to go to urgent care.

I am waiting for update from those who went, hopefully they made it all the way,

Travis -- that sucks! But it's good to hear that you got the thing out. I had a hike curtailed by a yucca stabbing once, but it was not as major an outing. Still -- there'll be other days! Good luck! :P

Saw them going down from Timber Mtn to the Saddle around 1-2pm.
They were in good spirits. Hope they're well.

On the way back I passed a Hiker who deceased 10 min up from the parking lot.
Somber sight seeing 20 Firemen and a sleeping bag covering the body while they waited for SAR to extricate the body.

I'm toasting my beer now in memory of that unknown hiker.

I heard an update from the 3 hikers who managed to complete the 11 peaks. Here is the brief e-mail I recieved.

"Jack, Kevin and I (Lee) did the hike on Saturday and had a pleasant outing. I'm not sure what the others did; we never saw them. We had cold, windy weather early in the morning on Baldy, followed by the usual calm, mild, and hazy conditions the rest of the day."

11 peaks in total, 13.5 hours. No pics, camera broke.

Mt Baldy Visitor Center hours are flexible.

Forest Service web site says 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Ranger who answered phone today says 8 a.m to 3:30 p.m.
Ranger who worked last weekend says 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In other words, flexible.

I have been told by the Visitor Center rangers that they like to open at 7AM in the summer to accomodate the early hikers. In winter, they go to the 8AM opening time. Closing is at 3:30 summer and 4:30 winter. The main thing is, if you park a vehicle inside their gate, be sure to know the closing time so you don't get locked in for the night.

Got it off Summitpost, Dingus Milktoast found it.

And yes, some scenes are from areas NOT around Baldy.

I'm guessing that a lot of the shots are from Stony Point near Chatsworth and also in the San Jacintos.

What a totally retro crack up. Gotta love those techniques. Harness? Nah, I just run the rope between my legs.

Pretty cool to see Harwood in the clip. Looks pretty much the same to this day.

Vertical Limits 1930s style! Great TacoDelRio! I had almost forgotten about THOSE DAYS. I was in the transition period...between bowline around the waist and tying the rope to a nice 2" wide tube sling around the waste (swami belt). Even more fortunate was growing up after the Dulfersitz that I only had the pleasure to use a few times and always seemed to remove skin or cause rope burns on anything steep hence, some would carry heavy clotheing or leather patches. My first climbing shoes were used klettershoes, then RDs then EBs and finally Firas (spelling on that?)and 5.10s. And I also began carrying pitons (pins), drilled out machine hex nuts, and real "chockstones" (I still use these sometimes). And helmits? What were those? Never used them on motorcycles so why when rock climbing? Until I went to the Canadian Rockies (piles of pieces). And I remember burnt hands on Goldline rope doing body belays. If you ever get the chance, watch the movie the Mountain with Spencer Tracy and "young" Robert Wagner. Eiger Sanction, Cliffhanger, Vertical Limits, etc are all copies of that one. As the Bob Hope song goes, Thanks for the Memories...

Rick

ps We need to do something together if you don't mind an old duffer.

Just curious anyone on this board will participate this year run on Sept 1st. I often see runners practiced in both Ski huts trail and the Devil backbone trail. Right now I am conditioning for it. Below is the link to info:

Walk three miles an hour. and watch a tree that you pass right next to the trail. That's how fast this guy would pass you!
That guy would pass you like you were standing still.
And he would pass me like I was running in the opposite direction!

And for the lady, the record is even head-shaking:

Women time: 1:15:32 Carrie Garritson (Age 11) 1988

That girl's record is only 15 minute behind the man's record
